Véritable phénix du jazz contemporain, le clarinettiste pluriel Michel Portal vient encore de surprendre son monde (comme il le fait en réalité depuis 50 ans) en signant un nouvel opus discographique intitulé « Baïlador » sur le prestigieux label Emarcy. Le multi-instrumentiste signe de sa main tout le repertoire de l’album (à l’exception de deux titres d’Eddy Louiss et Jack De Johnette) et livre sa musique à un spectaculaire “all stars” qui parvient à dépasser le charme et les limites inhérentes au genre en jouant plus “all” que “stars”. Sous la houlette du maestro qui en a vu d’autres, ces musiciens “poids-lourds” se laissent aspirer et inspirer par une musique superbe de fluidité et de contrôle, portée par l’exceptionnel tandem rythmique Scott Colley-Jack de Johnette et oxygénée par une brochette de solistes : Lionel Loueke à la guitare, Ambrose Akinmusire à la trompette, nouvelle star newyorkaise de l’instrument, Bojan Z au piano et Portal aux saxophones et clarinette basse. Heureuse nouvelle : le groupe déboule sur scène pour faire monter encore la température de la marmite du studio.
