Le jazz s’épanouit aussi volontiers sous les ors des salles de musique classique… Dès 1938, Benny Goodman ouvrait la voie en faisant swinguer le célèbre Carnegie Hall de New York, associant alors pour la première fois sur une scène aussi importante musiciens noirs et blancs. Count Basie et Lionel Hampton étaient alors de la fête… Soixante-dix ans plus tard, à Paris, c’est un autre clarinettiste, Michel Portal, véritable virtuose de la transgression, musicien transfrontalier par excellence, qui pousse la porte du Théâtre des Champs-Elysées où il a souvent joué Mozart, Weber ou Brahms. Le groupe inédit réuni pour la circonstance par le remuant septuagénaire est composé de fidèles triés sur le volet, tous fortes têtes et improvisateurs incandescents : Bojan Z au piano, Bruno Chevillon à la contrebasse et Joey Baron aux percussions. Portal ne s’embarrasse jamais d’interlocuteurs obséquieux ou timorés. Sa musique, fidèle à sa définition du jazz qu’il voit comme « La terre de l’inconnu et des sentiments extrêmes », naît de l’adversité (amicale) avec des musiciens sulfureux, prêts à jeter toutes leurs forces et fièvre dans la musique…
