Imprégné de mille sons, rythmes et traditions (du Pays Basque de son enfance à Mozart qu’il a joué si souvent dans les contextes les plus prestigieux, en passant par la musique de cinéma ou le free jazz), Michel Portal n’a pourtant jamais pu donner l’impression de jouer autre chose que SA musique. Improvisateur inspiré, le multi-instrumentiste (clarinette basse, sax alto et soprano) se produit à deux reprises en Île-de-France à la tête de deux groupes différents : en quintette à Vélizy avec Bojan Z (claviers), Ambrose Akinmusire (trompette), Scott Colley (contrebasse) et Nasheet Walts (batterie) puis en trio à Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines avec Daniel Humair (batterie) et Bruno Chevillon (contrebasse). Deux opportunités nouvelles de retrouver et observer grandeur nature l’art d’artificier de Portal qui n’a pas son pareil pour identifier et aimanter les musiciens les plus excitants et mettre toute l’équipe sous haute tension créatrice et féconde – ses partenaires autant que lui-même.
