Michael Tilson Thomas, soixante-quatre ans, ancien chef principal de l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres et depuis 1995 directeur musical de celui de San Francisco, fait ce soir ses débuts avec l’Orchestre de Paris. L’événement est de taille puisque le chef américain n’avait plus dirigé d’orchestre français depuis… 1992, lors d’un concert avec l’Orchestre national de France. Comme il y a dix-sept ans, dans cette même Salle Pleyel, le soliste sera Vladimir Feltsman dans un concerto russe (le Concerto en si bémol de Tchaïkovski). Le pianiste et le chef s’apprécient, reconnaissant l’un en l’autre un musicien d’exception. Connu pour ses interprétations de Mahler, qui permettent de voir en lui un digne héritier de Bernstein, « MTT » dirige ensuite la Cinquième Symphonie de Chostakovitch, une lecture qui ne devrait pas manquer de souffle si, comme on peut l’espérer, le chef parvient à transmettre à l’orchestre son énergie flamboyante.
