Avez-vous été consulté lors du choix de la pièce à travers laquelle votre œuvre fait aujourd’hui son entrée au répertoire de la Comédie-Française ?
Michel Vinaver : Oui. Lorsque Muriel Mayette m’a demandé quelle pièce j’envisageais pour cet événement, j’ai immédiatement répondu L’Ordinaire. Approuvant ce choix, elle a proposé ce texte au comité de lecture, qui s’est lui même prononcé pour son inscription au répertoire de la Comédie-Française. J’avais depuis longtemps envie de revisiter cette œuvre. Lors de sa création au Théâtre national de Chaillot, en 1983, Alain Françon et moi-même avions commis l’erreur de construire une représentation hyperréaliste, chose qui, je pense, handicapait la perception du spectacle. Cette création Salle Richelieu est l’occasion de lui donner une nouvelle chance.
Dans quelle mesure L’Ordinaire vous semble-t-elle être une œuvre représentative de votre écriture ?
M. V. : D’abord, il s’agit d’une pièce qui fait preuve d’une approche discontinue du dialogue, donnant ainsi naissance à une polyphonie de voix, de thèmes, de situations. A partir de cette polyphonie, des phénomènes musicaux et textuels apparaissent : des accords, mais aussi des chocs, des collisions, comme des étincelles qui produisent du sens. C’est l’un des aspects importants de mon écriture. De plus, dans L’Ordinaire, comme dans la majorité de mes pièces, on est toujours dans l’instant même de la parole au moment précis où elle se prononce. Le personnage n’a jamais d’avance sur le public, il se situe toujours dans l’exact présent des choses qui prennent corps sur scène.
Pourquoi avoir décidé de revisiter ce fait divers tragique ?
M. V. : Pour éclairer l’une des lignes directrices de L’Ordinaire : le « faire comme si », attitude que la plupart des gens adoptent lors d’événements exceptionnels. Dans ma pièce, les survivants de la catastrophe aérienne continuent à fonctionner — mentalement, affectivement — comme si rien ne s’était passé.

Cette façon de ne pas vouloir dévier, quoi qu’il arrive, de la trajectoire de son existence peut bien sûr être un facteur de survie, mais également de dislocation, de dissolution de l’individu. Ainsi, certains des personnages meurent alors que d’autres s’adaptent et changent radicalement. Ce changement radical, ce passage d’une structure pyramidale du pouvoir à une démocratie réinventée, à un « vivre ensemble » qui sort des habituels rapports hiérarchiques de la société, constitue le thème central de L’Ordinaire.
Quelles sont les grandes orientations de votre mise en scène ?
Gilone Brun : Plutôt que d’illustrer le texte, nous avons souhaité créer un rapport plastique à l’écriture en donnant une place centrale à la présence des corps et des voix dans l’espace. Au fur et à mesure de la construction du spectacle, nous avons procédé à un travail d’évidement pour que ne subsiste que le cœur de l’essentiel. Cela, en imaginant une scénographie qui permette une grande proximité avec le public, une grande intimité de la parole. Nous avons ainsi pensé notre décor comme un élément de dialogue avec la Salle Richelieu. Il s’agit d’un vaste promontoire qui, tel un bélier, s’avance dans l’orchestre, vient fracasser le cadre de scène.
Vers quelle approche du texte avez-vous mené les Comédiens français ?
M. V. : Nous avons travaillé comme deux chefs d’orchestre dirigeant des instrumentistes, deux chefs d’orchestre structurant une polyphonie de voix. Lors des répétitions, j’ai subdivisé le texte en 48 segments que nous demandions aux comédiens de jouer selon un procédé de sélection aléatoire, en tirant leur numéro dans un chapeau.
G. B. : Chaque segment devait être envisagé comme une fin en soi, en dehors de toute liaison avec ce qui suit ou précède, un peu comme si chacun d’entre eux représentait, à lui seul, la pièce dans son intégralité. Cette méthode de travail nous a permis de ne pas nous enfermer dans une conception narrative de la pièce, ou dans une construction psychologique des personnages.
