Organisé autour du solstice d’été pour célébrer la nuit la plus courte de l’année, le Midsummer offrira l’ambiance la plus shakespearienne de tous les festivals estivaux. Il n’est pas courant de rapprocher les cultures anglaise et française, qui sont plutôt connues pour entretenir une solide dualité. C’est pour contrer cette idée répandue qu’a été créé le centre culturel de l’Entente Cordiale, qui accueille cet événement. Si la programmation fera la part belle à Fauré, Purcell, Britten ou Haendel, elle nous donnera aussi l’occasion de découvrir des compositeurs moins fréquentés comme William Walton ou Frank Bridge. Soucieux d’ancrer cette réflexion dans une perspective contemporaine, le festival invite un compositeur français, Olivier Penard, pour la création de sa pièce Phantasy, ainsi qu’un anglais, Orlando Gough, pour sa pièce The World Encompassed. Côté interprètes, on pourra écouter entre autres l’ensemble Sequenza 9.3 et le claveciniste Benjamin Alard, le King’s Consort et Jordi Savall. Enfin, pas d’ambiance shakespearienne sans théâtre : Le songe d’une nuit d’été sera mis en scène par Pip Simmons.
