Dans les symphonies de Chostakovitch, comme dans sa musique de chambre, il n’est pas difficile d’entendre des échos de l’histoire – mais encore faut-il savoir les décrypter. Avec la Treizième Symphonie (1962), l’ambiguïté n’est plus de mise. Les poèmes d’Evgueni Evtouchenko mis en musique dans chacun des cinq mouvements sont autant d’auscultations grinçantes voire terribles de la société de son époque, à commencer par Babi Yar, qui donne son titre au premier mouvement et à la symphonie entière. Rarement la musique de Chostakovitch n’a atteint une telle intensité dramatique que dans cette évocation du massacre des Juifs d’Ukraine en 1941, portée par la basse (ici, Matthias Goerne, excellent interprète du compositeur soviétique), un chœur d’hommes et un orchestre puissant.
