On ne présente évidemment plus ces chefs-d’œuvre rattachés à la première moitié de la production du compositeur, le « Cinquième » dit « L’Empereur », contemporain des Symphonies n°5 et n°6, étant achevé en 1809 alors que Beethoven a encore plus de quinze années de productions musicales devant lui… Pour mener à bien l’aventure de programmer cette intégrale en quatre concerts, Mikko Franck choisit la carte de la diversité en invitant cinq pianistes de profils et de générations très différents, sans s’encombrer non plus de considérations de chronologie : la grande dame russe Elisabeth Leonskaja ouvre le feu dans le Quatrième (le 24 janvier), la jeune nippo-allemande Alice Sara Ott interprète le Troisième (le 27), le français Pierre Laurent Aimard, dans le Premier, partage la scène avec le viennois Rudolf Buchbinder qui joue le Deuxième (le 31), avant que Bertrand Chamayou n’ait le mot de la fin dans le monumental concerto « L’Empereur » (le 3 février). En compléments de poids dans chaque programme, Mikko Franck choisit avec goût des partitions de compositeurs français contemporains de Beethoven ou influencés par lui, dont certaines très rares comme la Symphonie n°3 de Louise Farrenc, la Symphonie n°2 de George Onslow ou la Petite symphonie pour vents de Gounod.
