C’est l’un des derniers et plus audacieux projets du collectif Mâäk qui fête ses vingt ans, ce laboratoire hyper actif du jazz belge réunissant les meilleurs musiciens du pays : un big band débridé piloté par le trompettiste Laurent Blondiau, « parrain » de la scène musicale bruxelloise, et par le saxophoniste Guillaume Orti. Ce « grand format » comme on dit de son côté de la frontière, a vu le jour en juin 2014 et depuis fait le bonheur de nombreux festivals importants (Jazz Middelheim, Gaume Jazz, Mithra Jazz à Liège, etc.), se distinguant par une irrévérence, une énergie collective, le brio de ses solistes souvent renversant et un coriace sens de l’humour. « Dans ce big band, nous défendons en même temps une écriture et une part belle laissée à la spontanéité » souligne Orti. « Il y a dans ce groupe à la fois seize personnalités qui sont des improvisateurs incroyables, mais qui sont aussi de supers lecteurs capables de se mettre au service d’une écriture. Et chaque musicien peut contribuer au répertoire s’il est inspiré… » complète Blondiau. « MikMâäk », le premier album du big band, enregistré en juin 2015 (De Werf Records), témoigne de ces qualités, mais la vraie aubaine sera bien de pouvoir les entendre prochainement pour la première fois sur une scène parisienne.
