« Après l’aventure du Roi Lear, qui dura quatorze ans entre la genèse du projet et sa réalisation, Michel Piccoli voulait jouer un autre Shakespeare. Comme une plaisanterie entre nous, je lui ai proposé Minetti, que Thomas Bernhard écrivit en hommage à son comédien favori, Bernhard Minetti, un des monstres sacrés du théâtre allemand. », dit le metteur en scène André Engel. Acteur sur le retour, Minetti revient à Ostende un soir de Saint-Sylvestre. Il attend dans le hall d’un hôtel, le masque du Roi Lear réalisé par James Ensor dans sa valise, avec l’espoir de jouer la pièce de Shakespeare et d’ainsi retrouver sa gloire d’antan. Le directeur du Théâtre de Flensburg tarde et Minetti évoque son existence passée devant les témoins de sa patience, de plus en plus vaine. « Enthousiaste et séduit par le trait d’humour » qui consistait à prolonger le rôle de Lear à travers son avatar théâtral, Michel Piccoli s’est emparé de la proposition d’André Engel avec passion. « Evidemment et inévitablement, Michel Piccoli incarne, de par sa biographie, la figure du vieil acteur mais le personnage nous intéresse avant tout pour ce qu’il dit du théâtre, du rapport au public, de la solitude de l’artiste, des choix, de la responsabilité sociale et politique du métier d’acteur. », remarque le metteur en scène qui trouve en Piccoli et Bernhard deux monstres à la mesure de son exigence et de son talent.
