Le roman mythique hugolien devient Misérables, un spectacle à la fois impertinent et plein d’humilité. Le décor de Vincent Blot et l’univers musical évoquent le cirque et le cabaret. Sur la scène, Emmanuel Barrouyer, Philippe Person lui-même, et Anne Priol jouent et racontent Les Misérables. Les acteurs font revivre la rédemption du forçat Valjean, l’obstination du sévère Javert, la monstruosité du couple Thénardier, le calvaire de Fantine et les amours heureuses de Marius et de Cosette. Durant la représentation, la narration et l’interprétation alternent à la façon d’un fondu enchaîné au cinéma. L’éclairage privilégie d’abord le trio Valjean-Javert-Fantine, relayé ensuite par le couple Cosette et Marius, sans oublier le truculent grand-père de Marius. Avec les changements à vue sur le plateau, le spectateur entre dans les coulisses du théâtre, à l’ombre de la littérature.
