Mozart n’a que quatorze ans lorsqu’il se voit commander pour Milan son premier opera seria. Exercice de style assurément, mais qui vaut par cela même : il ne faut en effet pas chercher dans ces trois actes et leurs vingt-trois numéros, taillés sur mesure pour les premiers rôles (dont le castrat Ettore dans le rôle-titre), les vraies « stars » de l’époque. En revanche, les arias et récitatifs, travaillés avec une application forcenée par le jeune compositeur, sont des modèles du genre, qui conviennent parfaitement à la formation de jeunes chanteurs professionnels. Le jeune chef David Reiland dirige cette production confiée au metteur en scène Vincent Vittoz, rompu à tous les répertoires (qu’il a pratiqués notamment au sein de la Péniche Opéra) et qui possède ce regard inventif nécessaire pour animer ce Mithridate qui ne brille pas par sa continuité dramatique.
