« La tripière de génie » : c’est ainsi que Lacan surnommait Mélanie Klein (1882-1960) qui, la première, osa explorer l’inconscient des jeunes enfants et révéler leurs fantasmes. Partant de faits réels, le dramaturge britannique Nicholas Wright écrit en 1988 une pièce autour d’un épisode tragique de sa vie : la mort de son fils. C’est l’occasion d’imaginer un huis clos entre Mme Klein, sa fille Melitta qui l’accuse d’avoir poussé son frère au suicide, et Paula, une amie qui soutient que la mort est accidentelle. Entre ces trois analystes se livre une quête de vérité acharnée où chaque psyché est fouillée sans merci. Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman met en scène cette variation moderne de Médée et d’Electre, qu’elle avait créée avec succès en 1993 au théâtre de la Commune. Selon elle, « avec une distance toute britannique, qui n’exclut pas le rire au cœur de ces affrontements douloureux, Nicholas Wright cerne et compose, à la façon d’une sonate en trois mouvements, le trio féminin dominé par la voix redoutable de la mère. »
