Il n’y a pas d’expérience scénique qui ne soit avant tout voyage existentiel et quête de l’âme pour Antonio Latella qui veut voir chaque soir « lever l’ancre du théâtre ». Sur les pas du capitaine Achab ou sur ceux de Giordano Bruno, frères en absolu et en hétérodoxie, il conduit donc sa nef aventureuse afin d’élucider le désir effréné de connaissance qui pousse jusqu’au sacrifice le marin entouré de livres et le moine enveloppé d’étoiles, arpenteurs de l’inconnu mesurant leurs limites et leur finitude à l’aune du gigantisme écrasant de leurs aspirations. Entre Achab sillonnant les mers à la recherche de l’inhumain monstre blanc et Bruno pérégrinant en pensée dans l’espace interdit des confins de la création, se retrouve la même inexorable ferveur, la même solitude, le même inextinguible appétit d’aller là où personne n’a osé s’aventurer : deux destins comparables, même si l’un périt par l’eau et l’autre par le feu.
Des parcours initiatiques dessinant le devoir de l’art
Pour montrer l’envers du visible et ausculter l’énigme de Moby Dick, Antonio Latella confie le rôle du terrible Achab à Giorgio Albertazzi, réputé le plus grand acteur vivant du théâtre italien. Dans une pièce surélevée remplie de livres, le capitaine du Pequod est « pure pensée, entité incorporelle, dimension de l’être plus que de l’événement », trouvant son interlocuteur privilégié en Ismaël (Marco Foschi), le témoin de l’histoire et le seul survivant du baleinier, récipiendaire et transmetteur de cette quête de l’autre radical qui est finalement quête de soi. Deuxième métaphore de ce voyage au long cours qu’est le savoir, Le Banquet des cendres, adapté des géniales fulgurances astronomiques de Giordano Bruno, martyr de la raison et pourfendeur des clôtures : après l’expérience de l’énormité du monde, celle de la folle liberté de la pensée dont Latella donne à voir la marche en spirale. Quatre interprètes pour recomposer la parole éclatée d’un savant dilaté à l’instar du cosmos qu’il invente, en autant de systèmes possibles unis dans l’incessant mouvement de l’univers dont le geste théâtral se fait le rival en invention.
