Le comédien Cesare Capitani fait l’éloge de l’artiste maudit Michelangelo Merisi, dit Le Caravage, à l’occasion du 400ème anniversaire de sa mort. Le metteur en scène Stanislas Grassian propose un voyage dans le temps à travers une aventure singulière qui révolutionna la peinture. D’abord, est évoquée l’enfance dans le petit bourg lombard, puis l’initiation à la peinture, les premiers ennuis avec la justice et la fuite à Rome. Le jeune peintre connaît la gloire avec des tableaux d’une puissance violente et érotique. Mais Michelangelo fréquente voyous et prostituées qu’il prend pour modèles et amants. La prison et la misère le rattrapent quand il commet un homicide. Le spectacle met à nu les pensées intimes et la part d’ombre du Caravage. Sur la toile scénique, la lumière s’impose, perçue comme une métaphore de la liberté, telle la lueur mouvante d’une flamme qui sculpte les visages, les corps et les volumes : « Cesare Capitani réussit le tour de force d’incarner sur scène cet homme dévoré de passions », dit Fernandez. Près du peintre rebelle, la soprano Martine Midoux offre sa voix claire. Un autoportrait fascinant.
