Eclairage à la bougie sur une scène nue qui se fait à la fois plage, palais, bouge à putains, ruelle étroite des quartiers mal famés ; transformation de Laetitia Favart, par le jeu d’une simple cape, pour camper tous les personnages secondaires de l’intrigue ; présence intense et habitée de Cesare Capitani qui incarne un Michelangelo Merisi criant de vérité : tout, dans ce spectacle aussi économe qu’efficace, réussit à faire naître, entre ombre et lumière, une histoire, des situations et des personnages fascinants. Cesare Capitani, séduit par la vie mystérieuse du Caravage, s’est inspiré du roman de Dominique Fernandez pour écrire une adaptation théâtrale très bien construite, où le suspense est habilement ménagé et les considérations historiques et esthétiques savamment amenées. Mais là où la mise en scène de Stanislas Grassian excelle à servir le texte et l’œuvre du peintre et là où le spectacle brille avec éclat, c’est dans sa capacité à recomposer les tableaux du maître en reproduisant ses figures. Méduse, Judith, Isaac au moment du sacrifice, la Vierge morte, et tous les garçons sensuels que peignit leur amant semblent apparaître sur scène, formant un musée imaginaire stupéfiant de vérité. L’interprétation des deux comédiens est vérace et haletante, et l’ensemble compose un très beau spectacle, en tous points réussi.
