Alain, à cinquante ans passés, vient d’être licencié et veut comprendre pourquoi le monde ne marche plus droit. Claudine, sa femme, part travailler du matin jusqu’au soir. Fanny, leur fille, captive du démon du jeu, vend son corps et sa liberté à son créancier, le mystérieux Monsieur X. Philippe Crubézy, « écrivain engagé » cette saison au Théâtre de l’Est Parisien a voulu du concret (« ça se passe dans notre ville, à deux pas de chez nous ») tout en évitant les écueils du réalisme et de la poésie. Il s’agit d’ausculter l’âme d’un monde sans âme, de plonger au fond du cœur d’une société sans cœur, pour voir ce qui résiste de l’humain dans la déchéance imposée. Que vaut un homme qu’on a décrété inutile ? Que vaut une femme instrumentalisée ? Que reste-t-il de la spiritualité quand seuls les corps sont considérés ? Que vaut le travail s’il n’est pas œuvre de soi ? Pour comprendre, Alain « détruira sa raison, sa maison, son couple et sa vie ». Pièce noire, s’il en est, mais peut-être que seuls les condamnés à l’obscurité peuvent encore croire à la lumière…
