Alain, à cinquante ans passés, vient d’être licencié et veut comprendre pourquoi le monde ne marche plus droit et à quel moment il a dérapé pour devenir ce cloaque boueux où les plus faibles deviennent les jouets des plus forts. Enfermé dans le secret de son appartement, il broie du noir, mélange des couleurs et recouvre peu à peu les murs de peintures imitées des premiers balbutiements rupestres. Du matin jusqu’au soir, alors que sa femme continue à travailler, il cherche, dans l’archéologie des défaites et la généalogie du marasme, le sens de l’existence, créant là où on l’a détruit. Pendant ce temps, Fanny, la fille de Claudine et Alain, accepte de rembourser ses dettes de jeu en vendant son corps à son créancier, le mystérieux Monsieur X., qui l’installe comme putain et finit par l’aimer. Au jeu du qui perd gagne, le père et la fille sont donc à égalité, récupérant, l’un par l’art et l’autre par l’amour, les moyens d’échapper à l’absurde.
Un spectacle aux effets contrastés
Si le propos de Philippe Crubézy est poétiquement, dramatiquement et allégoriquement efficace dans le récit qu’il invente de la résistance créatrice d’Alain et si le couple que ce dernier forme avec sa femme et qu’incarnent avec une belle intensité Elisabeth Catroux et Jean O’Cottrell est crédible, il n’en va pas tout à fait de même dans les scènes entre Fanny et son « maquereau » énamouré. L’intrigue s’y noie dans un sentimentalisme un peu niais et la relation entre l’oie blanche et le viveur cynique découvrant l’amour au-delà et par le contrat sexuel a un arrière-goût misogyne qui n’est pas des plus savoureux. Si quelques scènes et quelques monologues (notamment celui de Claudine dans le métro) sauvent le texte, celui-ci a tendance à privilégier l’onanisme poétique à l’efficacité dramatique et ne parvient pas à donner à tous les personnages la même épaisseur humaine : Fanny et Monsieur X. restent falots et le récit de leur relation très convenu. L’ensemble compose donc un spectacle assez contrasté qui aurait sans doute supporté d’être élagué de ses longueurs bavardes.
