Dès sa première pièce, Mon bras (My Arm) qu’il écrit en 2002, Tim Crouch emprunte la voie d’un théâtre expérimental, qui se joue des conventions. Dans le cadre d’un cycle consacré aux écritures britanniques, la compagnie Studio Monstre met en scène collectivement ce texte pour un acteur-manipulateur. Écrite en cinq jours, cette histoire dont le héros lève un bras à dix ans et reste ainsi toute sa vie offre au comédien Théophile Sclavis une partition qui emprunte aussi bien à la performance et à la conférence qu’au théâtre d’objets. Les questions que pose le monologue sont aussi nombreuses que les formes qu’il adopte. Marché de l’art, adolescence, rapport au corps, création artistique… Par son simple bras en l’air, le protagoniste de la pièce interroge ces sujets et bien d’autres. À vrai dire tous ceux que le spectateur voudra bien y projeter. L’allure faussement autobiographique du texte suggère encore une réflexion sur l’identité du personnage, et sur l’identité en général.
