Sous prétexte d’une partie de chasse, Duchotel va rejoindre sa maîtresse. Pour se venger, Madame Duchotel acceptera un rendez-vous galant. Les situations sont cocasses et burlesques dans ce vaudeville cynique et cruel. Dans Monsieur chasse ! de Feydeau, la mécanique de précision se double d’une profonde humanité. Les personnages sont de véritables funambules entre leurs pulsions et la recherche tout aussi forcenée de leur bien-être social. L’amour et la sexualité ne font pas forcément bon ménage, tout comme la raison et le désir, des lois antinomiques. L’intrigue classique évolue vers un véritable imbroglio : profitant du départ de son ami Duchotel pour une partie de chasse rituelle, Moricet courtise sa femme Léontine. Celle-ci décline avec bienséance la proposition, sauf si elle apprend de son côté qu’elle est trompée à son tour, ce qui ne peut qu’arriver… À l’adresse du 40 rue d’Athènes, se retrouvent finalement Moricet, Léontine, Cassagne et son épouse, qui n’est autre que la maîtresse de Duchotel. La mise en scène dépasse l’apparence des faux-semblants pour révéler la complexité des sentiments.
