Dans cette comédie-ballet écrite en 1669, l’année du triomphe de Tartuffe enfin autorisé, le rire se déclenche aux dépens de Pourceaugnac, avocat limousin à l’esprit « épais » venu à Paris épouser Julie, selon les vœux du père de la demoiselle, Oronte. Cependant, Julie aime Eraste, et les deux amants, afin de renvoyer le prétendant à Limoges, sont aidés par deux intrigants d’expérience, Nérine et Sbrigani, aussi fourbes que sans scrupules. Dès le début Molière croque un portrait sans appel de leur méchanceté. Isabelle Starkier ne s’y trompe pas en qualifiant Pourceaugnac de « pauvre type », sous le feu d’une intolérance féroce envers l’étranger, « victime ahuri et impuissante » de la multitude de stratagèmes mis en place par ses ennemis. Ainsi une redoutable machine comique s’emballe, propice à la mise en œuvre d’une « théâtralité débridée où tout n’est que spectacle et faux-semblants ». Sous le rire, et par-delà la charge burlesque contre les médecins et autres corps de métier, perce la cruauté tragique du rejet de la différence et de l’altérité. Un comédien noir (Christian Julien) interprète Pourceaugnac, entouré de quatre comédiens endossant tous les rôles. Travestissements, musique originale composée par Amnon Beham, danses et chœurs grinçants et trépidants, autant d’instruments qui théâtralisent la farce délirante et sadique, sur le fil entre comédie et tragédie.
