« Qu’est-ce que les Limousins vous ont fait ? » s’écrie Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, désemparé devant l’acharnement dont il est l’objet, et pour finir dépouillé de son argent, de son identité et de sa dignité. Dans cette implacable comédie-ballet de Molière, écrite en 1669, l’année du triomphe de Tartuffe enfin autorisé, la farce drôle et cruelle expose une nature humaine volontiers méchante. Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, gentilhomme limousin à l’esprit supposément “épais“, vient à Paris pour épouser sa promise, Julie, qui aime Eraste. Les deux amoureux s’emploient à écarter le prétendant indésirable aidés de deux fieffés valets, fourbes, expérimentés et sans scrupules, Nérine et Scribani. Ils inventent allègrement une foule de stratagèmes pour l’écarter : des médecins déplorent sa “mélancolie hypocondriaque“, des avocats l’accusent de polygamie, etc. La réussite de la mise en scène d’Isabelle Starkier repose sur deux points : la mise en lumière d’une cruauté sans limites sous le rire franc, et l’utilisation à plein régime de l’artifice spectaculaire du théâtre au fil d’une intrigue structurée par l’hypocrisie, les faux-semblants et les préjugés. Car ce qui déclenche la “colère effroyable“ du quatuor parisien (maîtres et valets), c’est bien le statut de provincial de cet étranger, exemple frappant d’une différence immédiatement condamnable.
Sarabande masquée et trépidante
Habile et signifiante transposition de la metteuse en scène : Monsieur de Pourceaugnac est ici interprété par Daniel Jean, comédien noir tiré à quatre épingles pour la circonstance, en habit blanc et longue perruque bouclée. Pauvre victime ahurie ! Autour de lui une sarabande masquée et trépidante de personnages férocement motivés par leur volonté de défaire le mariage se met en place, orchestrée tambour battant, et le jeu théâtral se donne à voir avec jubilation. « Tu aimeras ton lointain comme toi-même » a rêvé le philosophe ! Oronte est ici non pas le père mais la mère de Julie, personnage comique et inquiétant, ne sachant pas communiquer avec sa progéniture. Et les jeunes amoureux n’ont rien de faibles innocents contraints par leurs parents, leur perversité s’intègre parfaitement dans un portrait au vitriol d’une société qui vénère l’argent et qui expédie ses étrangers… dans un charter. Quatre comédiens endossent tous les rôles avec un talent consommé. Un théâtre qui dénonce l’intolérance, où la satire moliéresque résonne avec pertinence, occasion idéale de prouver aux plus jeunes que l’art de la scène est conçu pour le bonheur du… spectateur.
