« Digérer la langue et les personnages, libérer le fond du propos, intéresser adolescents et adultes, en cherchant la forme originale dans laquelle tout cela pourra s’épanouir, entre les mots, la musique et un univers visuel. » Tel est le tour de force auquel se livrent les artistes de la compagnie La Volige en adaptant le roman-fleuve d’Alexandre Dumas en en conservant le ton, l’intrigue, le rythme et la structure globale. Nicolas Bonneau, le conteur, se réapproprie la langue du feuilletoniste, la réinvente, l’oralise et la fait sienne pour un plaisir semblable à celui que l’on prend en se plongeant dans la lecture des aventures de celui qui passa sa vie à « attendre et espérer » pour laver ses blessures. « Envolées lyriques, chevauchées, grands espaces, western, bruitages, mots slamés, scandés, susurrés, chantés, refrains entêtants, leitmotivs, corps rythmiques » : la musique encercle le conteur pour porter avec lui le destin de son héros.
