C’est une route déjà toute tracée que prend ce festival : même si de nombreuses créations jalonnent les quinze jours de spectacles, il y a peu d’invités surprises. Quasiment tous les artistes sont déjà venus une fois à Montpellier, à l’exception de Blanca Li et de Bruno Beltrão. La fidélité à des démarches artistiques sur du long terme prime sur le défrichage de projets émergents, pour un festival devenu un véritable phare pour la mise en lumière de créations venues de France et de tout le bassin méditerranéen. Riche de ce positionnement, Montpellier Danse accueille dès son ouverture Bouchra Ouizguen, dans une création invitant des interprètes d’un genre tout particulier : les Aïtas. Ces femmes vivant en marge de la société marocaine – courtisanes il y un siècle, artistes du peuple aujourd’hui – sont avant tout chanteuses, dont les voix accompagnent aussi bien les mariages que les fantasmes masculins dans les cabarets. Pour la chorégraphe, qui fut danseuse orientale avant de compter parmi les créatrices contemporaines en vue entre la France et le Maroc, c’est un retour vers une forme de sensualité, un nouvel apprentissage au contact de ces femmes.
La danse, incarnée souvent par les créateurs eux-mêmes
La nouvelle création d’Herman Diephuis est également une forme d’hommage à la femme : avec cinq danseuses, il explore les images et les représentations liées à leurs corps, aussi bien dans la peinture que dans les médias de notre société, qui célèbre l’idéal de la beauté et le désir masculin. Ciao bella tente d’incarner et de retourner les clichés, subvertissant les images pour mieux en bouleverser les codes. Très attendue, la nouvelle pièce d’Angelin Preljocaj est, contre toute attente, un solo. Etant donné l’engagement du chorégraphe qui signe là une composition pour lui-même, l’événement est sans nul doute à ne pas manquer. Sur la scène de l’Opéra Comédie, il se confronte à l’écriture de Jean Genet, devenant Un Funambule au service d’un texte et d’un corps, comme un saut dans le vide qu’il ose, enfin, à cinquante-deux ans. Montpellier Danse est aussi le règne des chorégraphe-danseurs, tels qu’Israel Galvan ou Andrès Marin, deux génies du flamenco contemporain.
