« On a essayé de créer un nouveau modèle d’entreprise pour les musiciens
traditionnels de la Caroline du Sud. L’idée était de créer un nouveau mouvement
en vue de protéger les artistes et les aider à récuperer leurs royalties,
promouvoir leurs albums, plutôt que de les exploiter » expliquait récemment
Tim Duffy dans un entretien accordé à Libération.fr. En 1994, ce blanc fou de
blues crée la Music Maker Relief Foundation avec le double objectif musical et
social de soutenir de grandes légendes bien vivantes du blues du sud des
Etats-Unis. Des figures majeures, souvent en situation très délicate, à l’image
d’Adolphus Bell qui vivait alors dans la rue… Le projet devient label de
disque, sert de rampe de lancement à nombre d’artistes majeurs, et gagne au fil
du temps l’adhésion de grandes stars qui soutiennent le projet : Harry Belafonte,
Morgan Freeman, B.B. King, Dione Warwick, Tracy Chapman, etc’ Aujourd’hui, ces
papis et mamies du Blues sont sur les routes et les scènes du monde entier.
Leurs noms ? Macavine, Pura Fé,
Albert White, Eddie Tigner, Captain Luke et Adolphus Bell. Dernier double album
en date : «The last and lost blues survivors», une plongée superbe aux racines
du blues. Immanquable.
