Aujourd’hui, le nom d’Ernst Krenek est surtout associé à la liste des musiciens « dégénérés » édictée par le régime nazi. Ce natif de Vienne, qui connut à l’âge de vingt-cinq ans une soudaine célébrité avec son opéra mâtiné de jazz Johnny spielt auf, a ensuite poursuivi dans son exil américain une œuvre abondante qui reste cependant très largement ignorée. Composée en 1962, l’Alpbach-Quintett op. 180 au programme de ce concert est en fait un sextuor puisqu’au quintette à vent viennent se joindre les percussions. Il répond à la Kleine Kammermusik (« Petite musique de chambre ») d’un autre exilé, l’Allemand Paul Hindemith, et aux merveilleux Märchenerzählungen pour clarinette, alto et piano de Schumann.
