Vaillant gaillard, insolent rhéteur autant que valeureux drôle, égrillard de temps en temps : le verbe de Dario Fo trottine allégrement de rires en railleries et lutine volontiers le séant des nantis et des convenances pour échauffer les maux et salvatrices révoltes. Endossant le rôle de l’antique « joculator », c’est-à-dire « amuseur public », le comédien, peintre, dramaturge, metteur en scène, historien de l’art et prix Nobel en 1997 aime à se dire « jongleur au service du peuple »… Dans son Mystère bouffe, créé en 1968, il regarde sous les jupons de l’histoire sainte, dévissant les vignettes d’Epinal pourtant bien fixées dans tous les esprits dès l’enfance – tout comme Le tour de la France par deux enfants de G. Bruno imprima dans les mentalités l’histoire en tricolore et fut la catéchèse républicaine des années 1900, servie en masse à tous les écoliers. Pour gratter le vernis cireux des icônes saint-sulpiciennes et démystifier l’ici-bas, Dario Fo a donc pioché dans les évangiles apocryphes, des recueils de fabliaux et autres contes, n’hésitant pas à coudre ces truculentes matières au fil de l’actualité. Truffé de « fabulages », récits paillards rudement relevés voire carrément scatologiques, ce Mystère bouffe déniaise quelques épisodes bibliques et donne sa version, pour le moins iconoclaste, de l’Epiphanie, du massacre des innocents, du Pape Boniface VIII ou encore de la Passion du Christ.
Libérer la peur par le rire
« Il ne s’agit ni de numéros virtuoses, ni de saynètes destinées à faire rire, mais plutôt, à travers l’imagerie moyenâgeuse, de re-raconter l’histoire en toute liberté, du point de vue du peuple. Il s’agit de dire tout ce que le peuple garde sur son cœur. » explique Muriel Mayette, administrateur de la Comédie-Française et metteur en scène, qui fait entrer aujourd’hui Dario Fo au répertoire. Reste que cette vision du « peuple » mise en scène paraît bien fantasmatique et désuète, loin de la réalité des classes populaires d’aujourd’hui, gavées de clichés publicitaires, fictions commerciales et fables médiatiques, véritables mystifications contemporaines. Ceci dit, Mystère bouffe et fabulages ne manque pas de piquant. Bien qu’inégales dans le texte et l’interprétation, les « jongleries » offrent de belles partitions pour les acteurs. Dans la version vue (puisque plusieurs il y a), Catherine Hiegel et Hervé Pierre notamment y déploient leur immense talent sans cabotinage. La nativité et l’enfance de Jésus en deviennent désopilantes. La mise en scène de Muriel Mayette assemble les saynètes par des intermèdes parodiant la mièvre bondieuserie d’un tableau de la Passion, laborieusement édifiés avec les élèves-comédiens. Le détournement (ou retournement) du « Mystère » officiel aurait pu trouver écho plus cinglant et contemporain – l’actualité chez nous ne manque pas d’exemples fameux de « berlusconiades »… A défaut de satire mordante, on a des éclats de rire.
