Avec Mystère Bouffe, pièce engagée et morceau significatif d’un certain théâtre politique et social du XXe siècle, Dario Fo, versé dans les mystères du Moyen Âge, met à l’honneur le peuple dans la vision que celui-ci a du monde. Au centre de ce paysage humain et sur le plateau, se tient la figure du jongleur, un troubadour habile à démystifier les puissants et leurs discours mensongers. En échange, les pièces ou « jongleries » mettent en lumière la grandeur et l’humilité des pauvres gens, éloquentes à travers l’exposition revisitée d’épisodes bibliques, comme le Massacre des Innocents, les Noces de Cana, la Résurrection de Lazare, la Cène et la Passion du Christ. À ces tableaux, se mêlent des récits hauts en couleur, pleins d’un bon sens populaire que dévoilent le rire et le grotesque, des armes infaillibles contre l’oppression. Interprétées à leur création par l’acteur Dario Fo, les pièces de Mystère Bouffe sont des morceaux de bravoure à la gloire des acteurs. Vu le nombre des pièces et leur densité, le spectacle se décline en deux soirées indépendantes dans le même dispositif scénique. Muriel Mayette rend hommage par la même occasion, à un immense homme de théâtre.
