Directeur musical du Philhar’ depuis le 1er mai 2000, Chung poursuit son chemin et sa mission à la tête de l’orchestre parisien. Le premier objectif de ce chef est la recherche de ce « supplément d’âme » qui représente à ses yeux l’essentiel de ce qu’un orchestre peut apporter aujourd’hui à son public. « Tous les orchestres aujourd’hui jouent bien et sont virtuoses, mais je crois qu’il y a au sein de l’Orchestre Philharmonique une part d’humanité supplémentaire » déclarait-il récemment dans un entretien avec Christian Wasselin de Radio-France. D’où son engagement avec ses musiciens dans les actions de l’Unicef… Au Théâtre du Châtelet, le 19 mars, il dirige le Chœur et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France dans les Danses polovtsiennes du «Prince Igor» de Borodine et la musique du ballet intégral de Daphnis et Chloé de Ravel, avant, le lendemain, de livrer sa vision de deux œuvres majeures de la musique russe : Shéhérazade de Rimski-Korsakov et Le Sacre du printemps de Stravinski. Une semaine plus tard, à Pleyel, il revient à la musique française – le cœur de son projet avec l’orchestre – avec des extraits de Pelléas et Mélisande de Debussy, la création française du Concerto pour piano de Dalbavie (avec Leif Ove Andsnes, voir l’entretien avec le compositeur dans ce même numéro) et la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz (le 27), puis le 3 avril, l’Ouverture de «Benvenuto Cellini» de Berlioz, le Concerto pour violoncelle de Lalo (avec Mischa Maisky en soliste) et les Tableaux d’une exposition de Moussorgski orchestrés par Ravel. Un périple impressionnant.
