« Je suis devenu chef d’orchestre pour diriger Mahler. Je trouve que chaque symphonie de Mahler raconte l’histoire d’une vie, avec ses drames, ses angoisses, ses peurs, ses élans d’amour, etc. On a fini par comprendre que Mahler a conduit la musique symphonique, partie de Haydn et poussée en avant par Beethoven, à un sommet que personne après lui n’a pu dépasser » confie Myung Whun Chung. On ne découvre pas avec ce concert l’admiration du chef coréen pour le Viennois dont il avait dirigé à Paris une intégrale des symphonies avec son orchestre français au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées lors de la saison 2004-2005. Et quelques années auparavant, en 1997, c’est aussi très symboliquement Mahler qu’il avait déjà choisi pour signer son retour à Paris, à Pleyel, après sa pitoyable éviction de l’Opéra Bastille en 1994… Il dirige ce soir la dernière symphonie achevée du compositeur, la Symphonie n° 9 en ré majeur, conçue en quatre mouvements en 1909-1910, véritable testament symphonique influencé par la mort de sa fille de quatre ans au cours de l’été 2007, s’achevant sur un au revoir poignant et serein à la vie et l’amour…
