Pour expliquer le titre de l’une de ses dernières œuvres, commandée par l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France pour le bicentenaire de la mort de Mozart, Olivier Messiaen rendait hommage au « sourire » mozartien. De fait, il y a présente dans les œuvres de Messiaen comme dans celles de Mozart une jubilation inextinguible, comme une victoire sur le doute. Myung-Whun Chung, alors directeur musical de l’Opéra de Paris, fut l’un des interprètes les plus sincères et inspirés des dernières années de Messiaen. Pour lui rendre hommage, à l’occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, le chef coréen reprend cette filiation Mozart-Messiaen. En avril, quatre œuvres sont au programme : les « méditations symphoniques » de L’Ascension (1935) et Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum pour vents et percussions (1964) en regard de la Symphonie concertante pour vents et orchestre K297b (4 avril) ; les délicieuses Trois petites liturgies de la présence divine (1944) face à la Quarantième Symphonie (25 avril) ; enfin, le 11 avril, précédée du Concerto pour piano n° 17, Éclairs sur l’au-delà… (1991), la dernière œuvre achevée de Messiaen, immense fresque en onze tableaux que Myung-Whun Chung fut l’un des premiers à jouer et enregistrer.
