S’il l’on accède en France à la danse indienne à travers le bharata natyam ou le kathak, on connaît moins le kuchipudi, originaire du sud de l’Inde, et dont Shantala Shivalinbgappa est l’une des magnifiques représentantes. Virtuose dans ce style, elle a également bâti sa carrière d’interprète sur des rencontres plus improbables : Béjart, Brook, Bartabas, Pina Bausch lui ont ouvert de nouvelles voies. Ce spectacle intitulé Namasya est donc le prolongement de son parcours, qui s’exprime ici à travers deux solos écrits spécialement pour elle par deux géants de la danse contemporaine : Pina Bausch et Ushio Amagatsu. Elle revêt avec un naturel désarmant la traditionnelle robe longue de la première, tandis que le deuxième lui permet d’expérimenter une forme de lenteur et d’intériorité nouvelles, sans pour autant éloigner la danseuse de sa gestuelle traditionnelle.
