Une ville grouillante, un parler imagé, le mélo côtoie la poésie, et c’est Naples, bruyante et colorée qui apparaît sous la plume de De Filippo, tellement typique, en même temps qu’universelle. Le spectateur plonge en 1942 dans la ville d’Italie du Sud et ses quartiers populaires ravagés par le fascisme et la guerre. La famille Jovine fait du marché noir pour s’en sortir sous le regard désapprobateur du père. Revenant des camps un an plus tard, ce dernier prend conscience que sa femme a saigné tout le quartier. Ce père est un double scénique de De Filippo, « clown lyrique et misérable – sorte de Charlot napolitain – porteur d’ironie et de tendresse ». Le monde dont parle si justement le dramaturge italien est déchu, habité de figures à la fois roublardes et dignes, fortes d’une parole acidulée irrésistible. Vérité, pittoresque et universalité, le propos sur le plateau touche le public. La pièce de théâtre est légendaire, adaptée au cinéma, à la télévision et à l’opéra, traduite et jouée dans le monde entier. Inédite en France, Naples millionnaire traduite par Huguette Hatem est enfin portée aujourd’hui à la scène par la verve d’Anne Coutureau.
