De Naples, Oscar Wilde disait qu’elle possédait « Une beauté supérieure au génie et qui se passe de commentaires. ». Longtemps assoupie dans l’indolence de ses charmes rudes, la ville tant célébrée des écrivains est devenue depuis l’an dernier l’intense foyer d’une ébullition théâtrale : choisie sur concours parmi vingt séduisantes candidates, la cité de Pulcinella fut désignée pour accueillir le nouveau festival international de théâtre italien. Dirigée par Renato Quaglia, responsable des arts de la scène de la Biennale de Venise durant neuf ans, la manifestation s’affirma d’emblée internationale et ambitieuse. La deuxième édition garde le cap et s’appuie sur des collaborations avec le Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, le Festival d’Edembourg et le Wiener Festwochen. Avec une quarantaine de spectacles, dont une vingtaine venue de l’étranger, depuis les voisins d’Europe jusqu’aux lointains Japon ou Brésil, en passant par le Liban, la programmation témoigne de la diversité des cultures et des langues.

Le festival s’ouvre d’ailleurs avec L’Européenne, de David Lescot, désopilante et cinglante satire musicale sur la multiplicité des langues et les ratés de la communication, l’utopie d’un projet culturel européen et position de l’artiste dans la société normée selon les gris technocrates. Parmi les invités étrangers figurent quelques habitués des circuits internationaux, tels que Christoph Marthaler, qui vient avec Riesenbutzbach. Eine Dauerkolonie, mais surtout beaucoup de découvertes et quelques projets conçus pour Naples. Karole Armitage crée ainsi Made in Naples, chorégraphie sur Pulcinella, personnage emblématique de la Commedia dell’arte née au 17ème siècle. Internationale certes, l’édition 2009 offre aussi un panorama de la création italienne, que les metteurs en scène s’emparent des classiques, comme Antonio Latella, avec Trilogia della Villeggiatura de Goldoni, ou de textes contemporains, comme le Napolitain Enzo Moscato avec Pièce noire, Daniele Salvo avec Nel mondo grande e terribile d’Antonio Tarantino. Quant au très créatif Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, il présentera Le città visibili, du dramaturge singapourien Chay Yew qui s’inspire d’Italo Calvino. Comme quoi, une autre vision de la mondialisation est possible…
