Ce projet diffère de vos précédents, notamment parce que c’est une commande. Qu’est-ce qui vous a séduit dans cette demande de Suresnes ?
Il y a quelque temps, on m’avait proposé de collaborer avec des étudiants aux Etats-Unis, et j’avais l’intention de travailler avec eux sur l’album I Want You de Marvin Gaye. Cela ne s’est pas fait, mais quand Olivier Meyer m’a fait la proposition, j’ai tout de suite repensé à ce projet.
Comment appréhendez-vous le fait que ce soient des danseurs hip hop ?
J’écris beaucoup de choses, mais je noircis moins mon cahier que d’ordinaire, car je sais que ce langage est un univers auquel il va falloir que je m’adapte, tout comme eux vont devoir s’adapter à moi. C’est une rencontre, et je pense sincèrement que cela va dépendre d’eux autant que de moi. C’est un travail qui adviendra beaucoup sur le moment, sur le terrain. Bien sûr que j’ai plein d’images, plein d’idées, mais je sais très bien que ces choses-là évolueront tant qu’elles se confronteront à un univers que je ne connais pas beaucoup.
La musique de Marvin Gaye est-elle la base de cette création ?
Le spectacle s’appuie sur la musique de Marvin Gaye mais l’idée centrale est le parallèle entre le désir physique et le désir spirituel, mystique : tout ce qui est lié à un autre ou un ailleurs, tout ce qui peut être relié à une quête ou une aspiration. Je fais le rapprochement entre deux sortes de désirs qui peuvent se confronter. Je voudrais aussi travailler sur la notion d’immobilité, de vitesse, de répétition, je vois des scènes d’orgie, de batailles. Ce sera une pièce sans décor, mais on changera de lieux, on pourra être dans une boite de nuit, et ensuite situer l’action dans une grotte… simplement avec la lumière et la danse.

Allez-vous pousser les danseurs vers une forme de théâtralité, comme vous le faites habituellement dans vos créations ?
Oui, bien sûr, je vais les orienter vers cela et voir comment ils réagissent. Il n’est pas sûr que tous puissent s’y engouffrer. Ce projet ne s’élabore pas comme mes précédents. Ici, le rythme est plus soutenu, nous travaillons sur un mois, et cela change beaucoup de choses dans ma façon de construire. Je dois penser différemment. Au cours de l’audition, j’ai choisi pour cette création des danseurs dont la personnalité m’intéressait vraiment. Pour moitié, ce sont des breakers.
Cette pièce est-elle une charnière, une étape qui peut bousculer votre travail pour l’avenir ?
J’aime bien l’idée qu’elle bouscule mon travail pour l’avenir. J’ai rarement fait des pièces avec « rien » sur scène, j’ai plutôt tendance à utiliser des lieux, des repères qui peuvent être évocateurs pour le public. Ici, il n’y a pas de lieu réel et c’est la lumière qui va induire les choses. Ce n’est pas parce que c’est un spectacle de hip hop que je vais éviter d’aller dans des choses très ardues. Peut-être que ce sera plus ardu que mes spectacles précédents ! Après, face aux contingences liées au hip hop, je ne sais pas à quel point on peut le déstructurer. En tout cas c’est ce que j’ai l’intention de faire.
