La musique de Morton Feldman (1926-1987) sait se déployer à partir de presque rien. Le compositeur américain est connu en effet pour ses partitions symphoniques aux proportions gigantesques qui s’interdisent cependant tout éclat, préférant une progression lente dans un mouvement quasiment d’immobilité. Le Festival d’automne, qui s’est maintes fois penché sur l’œuvre de Morton Feldman, ne pouvait manquer de célébrer la rencontre, qui eut lieu en 1977, entre ce musicien atypique et Samuel Beckett, dramaturge emblématique de la manifestation – rencontre cocasse si l’on considère que ni Feldman ni Beckett n’appréciait l’opéra. Sur proposition du compositeur, et sans avoir entendu une note de sa musique, Samuel Beckett écrivit un livret – dix phrases fragmentaires – qui dit le mouvement impossible, les « bruits de pas inaudibles », les traversées indécises d’un lieu qui ne peut se dire. La musique est à cette image, des mouvements presque imperceptibles, contenue dans l’indicible sur suraigu, du sous-entendu.
