Préau d’école, gymnase, cour, terrasse, plateau de théâtre : un tel spectacle est amené à investir des lieux non conventionnels, et sa conception même génère un rapport de proximité entre spectateurs et comédiens : ici on observe et on est observé. On entend le texte avec acuité et netteté, sans pathos, ce qui donne à réfléchir à la condition carcérale et aussi aux prisons mentales qui nous constituent. Neuf mètres carrés, c’est la taille d’une cellule de prison en France. C’est aussi la taille de l’espace central autour duquel est installé le public, entouré de panneaux métalliques couverts de tissu blanc, qui bloquent ou restituent la vue et le son. Ces Paroles de détenus ont été collectées par Jean-Pierre Guéno pour Radio France (au départ plus de deux mille textes) puis rassemblées dans un recueil. Rien de fictif, et le metteur en scène convoque sept comédiens pour partager ces paroles avec le public.
