L’Orchestre philharmonique de New York est peut-être en train d’écrire une nouvelle belle page de son histoire. Après deux chefs à la réputation bien établie – Kurt Masur de 1991 à 2002, puis Lorin Maazel jusqu’en juin dernier – les dirigeants de l’orchestre ont fait le choix de la jeunesse. Alan Gilbert, le nouveau directeur musical, âgé de 42 ans seulement (soit deux de plus que Leonard Bernstein lorsqu’il prit la tête de l’orchestre), a déjà derrière lui une carrière bien remplie. Ses apparitions avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France ces dix dernières années ont laissé un très bon souvenir, que confirment les échos de ses récents concerts new-yorkais. Les deux programmes qu’il dirige à la Salle Pleyel témoignent de son large répertoire ouvert sur le classique et le romantique (49e Symphonie de Haydn, Symphonie « inachevée » de Schubert le 2 février) comme sur le contemporain (création d’Expo de Magnus Lindberg le 1er), avec une prédilection pour la musique russe (Deuxième Concerto de Prokofiev avec Yefim Bronfman et Deuxième Symphonie de Rachmaninov le 1er).
