Comment écrivez-vous ces chroniques ?
A la manière de Barthes, nous cherchons à interroger nos mythologies contemporaines. Ces chroniques s’inscrivent dans un processus au long cours et dans le désir de trouver une autre manière d’habiter un théâtre, et pour le théâtre d’habiter une ville. La saison passée, nous avons commencé à travailler avec des auteurs, des habitants de Seine-St-Denis et des lycéens à partir de questions que sème Barthes dans toute son œuvre. De ces rencontres, ateliers d’écritures et échanges où se frottent des points de vue différents selon les générations et les positions socioprofessionnelles, sont nés des textes et plusieurs rendez-vous avec le public pour des spectacles courts, des conférences, des lectures, des répétitions publiques… L’ensemble constitue « les chroniques ».

Pourquoi prendre pour thème l’Amérique cette saison ?
Lors des précédentes chroniques sur « La cité et ses faubourgs », les discussions avec les jeunes avaient révélé la prégnance de l’Amérique dans l’imaginaire collectif, avec un curieux mélange de fascination et de rejet, d’aveuglement et d’éblouissement. D’où l’idée de questionner notre « rêve américain », de tenter d’en saisir les enjeux, les fantasmes, les ruines, du point de vue de la France. Autrement dit, de comprendre nos « mythologies américaines ». Pour cela, nous avons choisi d’entrer par le roman noir, qui fouille l’Amérique dans ses profondeurs et dévoile souvent l’envers du rêve.
Quelle forme donnez-vous à vos chroniques ?
En écho à Barthes, qui identifiait cette littérature à une « forme douce », je me suis demandé ce que serait une forme douce au théâtre. Fragmentaire, la chronique appelle une nouvelle écriture scénique, proche de la « lecture flottante » dont parle Barthes, c’est-à-dire qui n’impose pas une approche strictement intellectuelle du propos mais propose une expérience esthétique. Avec Chantal de la Coste, nous avons imaginé un espace fragmenté, acoustique, visuel, qui permette aux spectateurs de tracer leur propre cheminement parmi les matériaux textuels.
