Voyage au bout de la nuit est un monument dont l’adaptation scénique apparaît comme une gageure. Pourquoi et comment avez-vous relevé cette gageure ?
Nicolas Massadau : Avec cette adaptation, la vie me fait un merveilleux cadeau. Nous avons tous, un jour, rencontré un auteur, un texte, qui nous a fait aimer la littérature, entrer en littérature, une affaire d’émotion, celle avec laquelle « tout commence », dit Céline. Voyage au bout de la nuit est, pour moi, ce texte-là. Il ne m’a jamais quitté ; il m’habite. Un soir de mars dernier, attablé avec Jean-François Balmer, nous nous sommes trouvés d’accord pour dire tout le sublime de ce texte, la beauté poussée dans ses limites. Si je suis capable de l’adapter, il le jouera, m’a-t-il dit. La gageure a pris la forme du désir, d’un désir formidable. Je m’y suis mis la joie au ventre.
Comment avez-vous choisi entre ce qui était à couper et ce qui était à conserver ?
N. M. : on se sent toujours un peu imbécile quand il s’agit de rappeler ce que l’on a fait il y a une vingtaine d’années. En l’occurrence, mon mémoire de fin d’études en lettres modernes portait précisément sur la théâtralité dans Voyage au bout de la nuit. J’ai toujours pensé qu’il existait une parenté profonde entre cette œuvre et les grandes tragédies classiques, de Sophocle à Shakespeare. Mais quand il s’agit de la montrer, c’est une autre paire de manches ! Il faut résister à la tentation de tout conserver. J’ai choisi un fil rouge : Jean-François Balmer, l’acteur, le narrateur. Comment lui permettre au mieux d’entrer dans la peau de Céline ? Mon autre souci a été de préserver l’œuvre dans son intégralité, dans l’intégralité de ses rebondissements voyageurs, de la guerre à la banlieue, en passant par l’Afrique et l’Amérique.

Comment conserver le souffle et la langue de Céline ?
N. M. : Il faut juste se laisser porter par ce souffle et cette langue. Et on peut compter sur Jean-François Balmer pour les faire vivre. Il ne peut pas être question de faire des coupes sombres dans ce texte. Je voulais travailler dans la trame même du roman, des quelque cinq cents pages qui le constituent. Je suis d’abord tombé à une bonne cinquantaine de pages sans jamais toucher au phraser. Les premières lectures sur le plateau avec Jean-François Balmer ont permis d’affiner encore le propos pour en faire entendre l’incroyable pertinence et toute la profondeur. Nous en avons tiré une quarantaine de pages, soit une heure et demie de spectacle. Tout notre travail, mené actuellement sur scène, tient à la manière dont il s’approprie le texte. Si son ressenti est mauvais, nous corrigeons en ajoutant ou en retranchant dans la dentelle. Nous pensons, à cette heure, tenir la version quasi définitive du spectacle.
Céline ne laisse jamais indifférent et le débat ressurgit aujourd’hui autour de ses engagements politiques. Que pensez-vous de ce débat ?
N. M. : Si vous le permettez, j’en appellerais à Céline lui-même : « Tout ce qui m’intéresse, disait-il, c’est d’être ignoré. Je suis un voyeur, pas un exhibitionniste. » C’est ce voyeur-voyant-voyageur de l’âme humaine que nous avons voulu voir monter sur scène.
Pourquoi Jean-François Balmer pour interpréter ce texte ?
N. M. : C’est l’interprète idéal. Cette fantastiquement réaliste tragi-comédie qu’est Voyage au bout de la nuit ne tient que par le regard que porte le narrateur sur les êtres et le monde. C’est ce regard que Jean-François Balmer incarne.
