Curieuse marqueterie de genres littéraires que Nicomède… Tragédie raillée de traits grotesques, intrigue politique brodée sur l’histoire romaine, commerce machiavélique des cœurs tout autant qu’éloge de la résistance à l’impérialisme et comédie des compromissions diplomatiques : l’œuvre cache bien des fantaisies sous la sobriété des vers classiques. Valeureux guerrier déjouant complots et pièges, Nicomède échappe en effet à l’effigie du héros tragique : ironique orgueilleux, téméraire insurgé face à l’occupant romain, cet idéal de vertu démasque les ruses et les séductions du pouvoir pour le triomphe de la justice. Après La Mort de Pompée, Sophonisbe, Sertorius et Suréna, qui taillent différentes facettes de l’expansionnisme romain, Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman parachève un cycle avec Nicomède. Fine lectrice de Corneille, elle rassemble les spectateurs autour d’une vaste table de banquet, comme pour inviter l’assemblée à ce festin de mots où chaque réplique attaque, ou esquive ou fait mouche. Entre tragédie et bouffonnerie, mensonges et convoitises, passion et raison, ce théâtre de la politique montre que justice et générosité peuvent tout de même l’emporter…
