« Et maintenant, je vais danser la guerre » déclare Nijinsky avant de donner ce qui sera sa dernière représentation à l’hôtel Suvretta à Saint-Moritz. Visage déformé par la souffrance, corps secoué de spasmes comme traversé d’autant de balles, Nijinsky fait naître une danse singulière de son chaos intérieur. Ensuite, il sombrera dans la folie. C’est le point de départ qu’a choisi John Neumeier, immense chorégraphe et directeur du Ballet de Hambourg, pour explorer la vie et l’œuvre du « Dieu de la danse » du XXe siècle. À travers les souvenirs et les hallucinations qui auraient pu surgir dans l’esprit du danseur lors de cette dernière représentation, le spectateur est amené à revivre de manière mi-biographique, mi-narrative, la grandeur et la décadence de la vie du danseur exceptionnel et du chorégraphe visionnaire. Son entourage est convoqué et quelques-uns de ses plus grands rôles, dans des costumes inspirés par Alexandre Benois et Léon Bakst, sont évoqués. Extrêmement documenté, le ballet est un tour de force technique pour les danseurs, et une œuvre émouvante et sensible qui rend hommage à ce personnage fragile, proie des fantasmes de ses proches.
