On le surnommait « Nik l’enchanteur »… Maître américain de l’abstraction, Alwin Nikolais (1910-1993), auteur de près de 130 pièces, aura porté au firmament l’utopie de l’art total, où danse, musique, scénographie, costumes et lumières tiennent égale importance. Lui-même peintre, sculpteur, poète, marionnettiste, compositeur et pianiste, il bouscula les lignes esthétiques et la dynamique traditionnelle de la danse des années 50 par un jaillissement de couleurs, de lumières, d’effets d’illusions et d’événements sonores. « Motion, not emotion » aimait-il à dire, affirmant ainsi sa conception très novatrice du mouvement. Son enseignement, qui féconda nombres de chorégraphes français lorsqu’il dirigea le CNDC d’Angers de 1978 à 1981, reposait d’ailleurs sur « The Big Four » : l’espace, le temps, la plasticité, la fluidité intérieure. Avec un programme composé de cinq pièces majeures (Crucible – Liturgies – Tensile Involvement – Noumenon Mobilus – Mechanical Organ), la Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company de Salt Lake City offre une belle traversée à travers l’œuvre de cet artiste majeur.
