Créé en 1987 à Houston, Nixon in China appartient aux œuvres qui ont marqué la création lyrique de ces dernières décennies. Sur un livret d’Alice Goodman qui s’appuie sur les discours des deux chefs d’Etat, le premier opéra de John Adams fait entrer la politique contemporaine sur scène et relate la visite de Nixon dans la Chine de Mao Zedong en 1972, initiant un tournant dans les rapports entre les deux pays au milieu de la guerre froide. Dans cette partition qui puise dans le répertoire des big bands des années quarante, le compositeur livre une synthèse personnelle de la pulsation minimaliste, qui a forgé ses débuts, et de l’élan lyrique. Trente-six ans après la production de Peter Sellars, Valentina Carrasco revisite les illusions et désillusions de la diplomatie internationale. Défendu par Gustavo Dudamel, l’ouvrage met à l’affiche deux des plus grandes stars d’aujourd’hui dans le rôle des époux Nixon, Thomas Hampson et Renée Fleming, laquelle fait son retour à l’Opéra de Paris après plus de dix ans d’absence.
