NEW MORNING / JAZZ VOCAL
C’est l’une de ces bizarreries assez inexplicables de notre vie musicale, la chanteuse anglaise Norma Winstone, étoile du label ECM depuis 20 ans, source d’inspiration majeure pour une kyrielle de chanteurs de jazz actuels, n’est que très exceptionnellement à l’affiche des scènes françaises. Son art immense et éminemment personnel repose sur le timbre parfait de sa voix balançant entre de sublime aigus cristallins et tendres et des graves sensuels au charme trouble. Improvisatrice toujours inspirée, Norma Winstone a chanté aux côtés de quelques-uns des musiciens les plus importants et exigeants de sa génération : Kenny Wheeler et John Taylor (avec lesquels elle fonde le trio Azimuth à la fin des années 70) mais aussi Ralph Towner, Jonn Surman, Peter Erskine, Fred Hersh ou Dave Holland. Par bonheur, à l’initiative du chanteur français Thierry Péala, elle est aujourd’hui l’hôte d’un soir du New Morning entouré de son légendaire trio composé de Glauco Venier (piano) et Klaus Gesing (saxophone soprano, clarinette basse). A 75 ans, celle qui fut nominée plusieurs fois aux Grammy awards et dont la voix intacte sonne avec la classe et la grâce de ses débuts, vient d’être élue « Meilleure Vocaliste Jazz de l’année » dans son pays. No comment. Un concert important.
