Procréation à la demande, clonage, banques de spermes étalonnés, mères porteuses, cryogénisation… Autant de nouvelles « techniques » qui bouleversent notre rapport au monde et notre façon de penser l’humain. Fragmenté, loué, disséqué, vendu par pièce, le corps devient un objet marchand, négocié et calibré sur gabarit. Toujours en quête d’un art en prise avec les transformations de société, Julie Bérès questionne la hantise de la finitude, les enjeux de la bioéthique et les dérives que pourraient engendrer les découvertes génétiques sur la manipulation du vivant. « Ces mutations reflètent l’angoisse face à la mort, la sienne et celles des autres. La science et le marché apportent une forme de consolation, comme la religion à sa manière. » D’où le titre, Notre besoin de consolation qui renvoie au texte du Danois Stig Dagermag… Au fil des mois, Julie Bérès a collecté des informations historiques, juridiques, scientifiques ainsi que des faits-divers et des témoignages. A partir de ces matériaux documentaires, elle a tramé une fiction onirique, qui procède par digressions, association d’images, métamorphoses et métaphores, qui révèle toute la complexité des évolutions vers cette « humanité mutante ».
