Portrait d’une troupe de comédiens à bout de forces, perdue au cœur de l’Europe centrale menacée par la guerre, la pièce de Jean-Luc Lagarce est à la fois un hommage au difficile métier de vivre et à celui non moins ardu qu’est le théâtre. En posant un regard ironique et attendri sur les saltimbanques, Lagarce décrit la manière qu’a chacun de trouver sa place dans l’existence et dans ses engagements: Joséphine et Raban, les fiancés en équilibre entre passion et devoir, Eduardowa entre silence et déclaration, Karl entre écart et inscription, les Tschissik entre gloire passée et relégation à venir, Max entre le confort d’une vie insipide et le risque de la guerre. Tous oscillent entre lucidité et mensonge à soi, entre masque et vérité, comme on le fait au théâtre et comme on le fait dans la vie. Faut-il fuir ou rester et «comment vivre ensemble ou séparés»? C’est à ces deux questions, qu’il explore théâtralement depuis plus de quinze ans, que Michel Belletante entend à nouveau tâcher de répondre en mettant les pas de ses comédiens dans ceux dont Jean-Luc Lagarce fait le portrait sensible.
