Faussement quotidienne et faussement simple, la langue de Jean-Luc Lagarce est souvent un piège pour ceux qui l’affrontent et s’y asphyxient parfois. C’est peut-être d’avoir été si attentive, de son propre aveu, aux respirations, aux virgules et aux hors-champs du texte qu’Elisabeth Hölzle parvient à le rendre à sa poétique fluidité et à sa désarçonnante vérité. Attentive à l’esprit autant qu’à la lettre, la metteur en scène évite les leurres d’une lecture trop facile et d’une emphase lourde, impose la douceur contre l’évidence des affrontements, la simplicité contre l’audace des poses et l’émotion que servent au premier chef les intermèdes en chant yiddish qui installent une ambiance faite de nostalgie, d’ironie et de tendresse dès les premiers tableaux. Histoire d’une troupe que celle que narre ici Lagarce, empruntant au Journal de Kafka les éléments d’un matériau qu’Elisabeth Hölzle travaille délicatement, le faisant ressurgir comme en transparence.
Vie du théâtre ; théâtre de la vie
Les comédiens du Centre dramatique de La Courneuve, dont le jeu resserré et précis offre les conditions d’une belle différenciation chromatique entre les personnages, s’emparent avec vigueur et vitalité de cet éloge du théâtre et de la troupe dont on sait qu’ils l’incarnent eux-mêmes avec générosité et pugnacité depuis plus d’un quart de siècle, envers et contre toutes les tentatives d’atomisation de la scène contemporaine. Néanmoins, il ne s’agit pas ici d’une célébration narcissique et la distanciation qu’offre la direction d’acteurs quasi chorégraphique permet d’éviter l’identification platement psychologique. On se laisse donc porter par les aventures individuelles et collectives de ce groupe dont chaque membre tâche de trouver sa place dans l’existence et dans ses engagements : Joséphine et Raban, les fiancés en équilibre entre passion et devoir, Eduardowa entre silence et déclaration, Karl entre écart et inscription, les Tschissik entre gloire passée et relégation à venir, Max entre le confort d’une vie insipide et le risque de la guerre. Tous oscillent entre lucidité et mensonge à soi, entre masque et vérité, comme on le fait au théâtre, comme on le fait dans la vie. L’évidence ainsi rappelée de ce parallèle installe finalement Lagarce au rang des grands moralistes.
