Figure importante de la scène musicale belge (directeur musical de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Liège pendant plus de vingt ans et fondateur de l’ensemble Musiques nouvelles), Pierre Bartholomée (né en 1937) a parallèlement bâti une œuvre plurielle et personnelle. En 2003, sur un livret d’Henry Bauchau, il compose son premier opéra, Œdipe sur la route, avec un rôle-titre taillé sur mesure pour José van Dam : une belle réussite, où s’équilibrent l’intériorité des personnages et une narration portée par une écriture symphonique d’une grande finesse. Pour son retour au grand opéra (après un poème lyrique, La Lumière Antigone), Pierre Bartholomée s’empare du roman de Pierrette Fleutiaux, Nous sommes éternels (Prix Femina 1990), adapté par l’autrice : un grand récit onirique et lyrique, funambulant entre présent et passé meurtri, dirigé par Patrick Davin avec des rôles principaux confiés à Karen Vourc’h et Sébastien Guèze.
