Composée sur un livret de Hofmannsthal, collaborateur régulier de Strauss pendant plus de vingt ans, d’Elektra à Arabella, La Femme sans ombre a l’allure d’un conte initiatique nourri par les théories freudiennes sur l’inconscient, qui faisait alors l’actualité de la vie intellectuelle viennoise. Un empereur chasse une gazelle blanche qui se transforme sous ses yeux en une belle femme. Il l’épouse, mais elle ne peut lui donner d’enfant car elle n’a pas d’ombre – et pas d’empathie humaine. La richesse du drame et de l’écriture musicale en font une œuvre exigeante à monter, qui sera pour la première fois sur le plateau de l’Opéra de Lyon, dans une mise en scène de Mariusz Trelinski. Le cinéaste et metteur en scène polonais, directeur artistique de l’Opéra de Varsovie, s’appuiera sur les ressources du septième art, avec des références à Lars von Trier ou Ingmar Bergman, pour plonger dans ce chef-d’œuvre dont Daniele Rustioni fera ressortir les chatoiements orchestraux.
